Last week we wrote about a session at the Aspen Ideas Festival that discussed the role the Western world plays in the Arab Spring; in particular with the Syrian conflict (from which more horrific news seems to emerge every day.)
In today’s penultimate session at Aspen, a panel discussed the role women play in the struggle for democracy all over the world– whether it’s as a representative in a legislature, as leadership at consultancy firm that promotes human rights and good governance, or as a peace activist like Amira Yahyaoui, the founder of a non-governmental organization that now monitors democratic processes in Tunisia.
Yahyaoui offered her perspective on American involvement in the Arab Spring, specifically in Tunisia where the first uprisings began. She said that many U.S. observers have expressed doubt that democracy and equal human rights are compatible with the values in what are predominantly Muslim countries.
